Inaugural Lecture at the Melbourne University

Our CEO, Stirling Forbes, had the honour of presenting the inaugural lecture at the University of Melbourne to kick off a series of workshops. These workshops are aimed at inspiring students to explore the diverse range of disciplines and opportunities through which they can contribute to the success of commercial and government space missions.

Drawing from his professional experiences as the founder of Forbes-Space, he shared insights on the importance of communicating your passion, seizing opportunities and understanding your client’s needs and how you can help them succeed.

The lecture also covered topics ranging from the upcoming advent of low-cost space tourism to the potential of permanent lunar bases and artificial gravity space stations in the future. The aim was to highlight the exciting wealth of opportunities available to aspiring space enthusiasts who want to make space their profession as many of us did ourselves.

He also emphasised the value of an interdisciplinary approach in the space sector, an especially prevalent lesson from his time at the International Space University, which enables you to have a discussion with every crucial stakeholder in the space sector and to understand their vision and their needs.

What is crucial in the space industry is that we continue to accept and actively encourage additional viewpoints, knowledge, skills and different ways of doing things from every discipline. This is crucial to building partnerships and fostering growth both within the space industry and with non-traditional industries.

As in every industry, cultivating the passion, curiosity, and determination of the next generation of enthusiasts will be crucial in accelerating the growth and innovation of the space industry. It’s up to all of us to effectively communicate the opportunities available to encourage this further.

He is looking forward to being at IAC2024 in Milan, but now also doubly looking forward to being at IAC 2025 in Sydney and seeing hopefully a new generation of Australian space pioneers!
